About

A man of many secrets and unspoken words, hidden behind a charismatic smile. Much of his later years were spent traveling the regions pretending to be a faith healer, with a wandering spirit named Yoru in tow.

Nobu lost his life quietly and unceremoniously after years of fighting in a war, with no one by his side and nothing to his name. When his body was found, he was holding a kaiken with the word 「forever」 engraved into the blade.

Personality

Nobu's demeanour is malleable, depending on who he is presenting himself to. He can switch on a charismatic facade at the drop of a hat - the smile on his face giving way to all the right words in order to get what he wants. He has a silver-tongue which he uses primarily to con people out of their money, though sometimes it's purely for his own amusement. Every bit of his charm is manufactured, but beguiling all the same.

A wiser man should not be fooled by the wolf's sharp-toothed grin. For all his practiced charisma, Nobu has known rage and resentment far too early in his life, and it colors the very way he sees the world. Naturally distrustful of anyone he meets, he keeps himself detatched, emotionally. His temperament is similar to a cornered animal - ready to lash out at any given moment.

In his youth, Nobu is a portrait of a restless spirit, always looking and never finding. In his later years, much of that rabid energy has dissipated, though he remains an errant soul.

Story

Mothers who disappeared, fathers who didn’t love you, kids who mocked you—everything would shrink to pinpoints and vanish. Up there: nothing but stars.

[ Much of this log has been left empty, or the words obscured with splashes of ink. ]

Nobu was born in a small village nestled between lush forested mountains. The only son to ▇▇▇▇ , a retired samurai, and Inaba ▇▇ , a simple washerwoman. Their union was unstable from the start, and the boy would often retreat to the peaceful haven of the forests surrounding. Despite his father's unrelenting stories about war and noble warriors, Nobu's interests lay in the arts - poetry and literature.

But a wolf cannot shed its coat, and as a young man, Nobu secured a spot at a dōjō, where he met Hasegawa Takashi. Since he was a child, Nobu had never known stability, but in Takashi he found the anchor to his wild spirit. Still, he took it upon himself to pull Takashi into his schemes, and for a time in their youth, the two were inseperable. Even when their paths eventually diverged, time and time again, they would return to each other, unable to separate themselves from each other's gravity.

He's half of my soul, as the poet says.

However much you feed the wolf -- the wolf always hungers.

Perhaps war and violence was in his blood after all. As conflict continued to ravage the region, Nobu had set aside his brush and taken up his sword. Years passed, and the rebels fell. The fighting stopped.

Okuda Nobu, identified only by the name written on the inside of his journal, and later by his surviving daughter Umi, passed under a lone plum blossom tree during the warm summer. The exact date or cause of his death is unknown. When discovered, he was holding in his hand a kaiken with its handle removed, his thumb pressed against the hidden engraving inside - one simple word : 「always」.

Cheap brushes. Nobu is very particular about the quality of brush he uses for his writings. The most favored brush among his collection is made from bamboo and the hair of a wolf.
